When you

When you:

challenge me
I rise to the occasion.

hurt me
I shut down.

forgive me
I breathe a sigh of relief.

ignore me
I doubt you.

love me
I feel it.

support me
I embrace it.

cry
I lose control.

hurt
I hurt.

Finding Distance

Some of us are on a chain where our insecurities only let us go as far as we already know is safe. Periodically we may gain a link or two, allowing us to reach a little bit further, to experience new things than before but, this doesn't mean we will ever have the strength to ultimately break free. Outsiders will wonder why doing what was once easy, now seems impossible. It might not feel reasonable to them, or yourself, but that doesn't make it any less real.

My My Love

My My Love by Joshua Radin - This is the song that I walked down the aisle to. There are so many things I love about this song: the rhythm, the acoustics, the lyrics. But, I couldn't tell you why in particular we chose this for my walk down the aisle song other than it just felt right.

Trust what feels right.

Thunderstorm (2005)

The gray clouds gather, the storm is coming
I'm scared, I cry

The thunder is loud, and the lightning cutting
I run, I hide

The storm it follows me, I hear it close behind
I scream, I run

It catches up to me, and it tackles me down
I'm hurt, I'm alone

No Marriage Is All Sunshine

"No marriage is all sunshine, but two people can share one umbrella and survive the storms together."

If you don't already know, Mark and I got married November 30, 2013, outdoors in the absolute pouring rain, with nothing but umbrellas to help keep us dry. We had the above quote incorporated into the very minimal wedding decorations we had.

(Our wedding ceremony at Redwood Park, Surrey - November 30, 2013)

I chose this quote because it is something that I think holds true for us, but I suspect just about every other relationship (marriage, friendship, etc.) as well.

Deciding to spend the rest of your life with someone, you have to expect that you are not going to get along with each other 100% of the time. As individuals, and as couples, we have bad and good days, and sometimes you can even go for a stretch where things just feel a bit off. Also, life's circumstances are so unpredictable and frequently stressful, that it's only natural for it to sometimes feel like you have a dark grey stormy cloud hanging over you. But, what is most important, is that you remember you are both hanging on under that umbrella together.

Every storm is beautiful in good company...

Happy three year wedding anniversary to my most special man!

What ifs (2005)

What if I had to make a choice?
I wouldn't choose
What if I had to take a chance?
I wouldn't gamble

to much can go wrong, and the fear is just to strong

What if I could choose how to die?
I'd die in silence
What if I could choose how to live?
I'd never break a heart

But what if's will never be true.
What if's are the lies we tell ourselves
so we can make it through

What if's can be good or bad,
but they will never be what you've been promised you'll have...

Truth (2005)

A beautiful bird with wings so free
A girl with dreams for you to see
She spoke her heart, with emotions so wild
You would think she was still just a little child

A brave young girl, for she knows this well
Not everything is perfect, but you must not dwell
So enjoy her laugh, with such happiness and love
But don't forget the tears, because we can't always have fun

So then you ask, "Is she truly happy? She must not know the truth.
In a world full of hurt and heartache it must just be her youth."

But no, she reply's, "all you need is to believe
because as we all know, nothing is for free.
The secret lies within us all
The strength in knowing that you might just fall"

Now you must decide, do you trust this young girl?
She hasn't lived 100 years, nor has she seen the world.
But maybe knowledge isn't always that kind of smarts,
Just dig a little deeper and you will see that some things are better found by the truth in our hearts

Giving Up (2005)

There I was falling apart,
(Drawing from high school)
An empty soul lost in the dark.
You took my hand & held it tight.
Because of you I learned to fight.
A chance with you was more than I deserved,
But, once again I lost my turn.

Because of this hurt,
Because of this pain,
These thought have grown
That I just can't explain.

I took a chance,
You let me see
The kindness in people that makes us so free.
But a fool I was for believing such lies,
All along you knew it would end in goodbye

Because of this hurt,
Because of this pain,
These thought have grown
That I just can't explain

What's your thing?

It seems like out of everyone I meet these days, guys, girls, couples, etc., everyone seems to have a defining quality about them. There is something that sticks out so strongly that if anyone mentions their name, you immediately recognize them because of that particular thing. I'm not simply referring to physical qualities here, it could be something like a hobby or career they are known for too.

So, that has me wondering...what is my thing, or do I even have one? Also, is it good to be known for just one defining quality....what's the saying: "jack of all trades, expert at none"?

I've always thought of myself as a relatively well rounded person but, the more I think about it, the more I realize that I am limited in the interests I pursue. I play volleyball, I jog, I workout, I read, I write, I play boardgames, I walk, I hike, I play with my dog... Although that list may seem like it has a lot of items, they are all very similar in the category under which they fall. On the other hand, I don't think I'm known particularly for just one of those items. I would love to be an expert at volleyball, or the most physically fit/toned as possible, or spend my days searching for new mountains to hike because I was running out, or be the champ at all boardgames however that just isn't the case. I simply do a little of a few things that all are very similar in their classification.

How do you decide if this is a good or bad thing? Is it good to have a "defining quality?", and if so, how do you choose what you want that quality to be?

"The Forgetting Time" by Sharon Guskin

This is book #2 that I have started and completed in 2016!

(Source)
Summary:
This novel describes the journey of a once well-respected scholar, Anderson, struggling (due to a recently diagnosed illness) to complete his book about finding the afterlife within the living. Anderson pursues researching the case of a young boy, Noah, who talks of memories of loving lizards, baseball, and Harry Potter (none of which his single mother, Janie, has taught him anything about) as well as the traumatic memory of his own death-by drowning.

Review:
I often find myself wondering about death (yes, I know it sounds more than a little morbid, but I find the topic interesting regardless), and this novel definitely made me stop dead in my tracks and think more in depth about all the outcomes depending on your belief system. This book pushed the boundaries of what I am so insistent on believing, not necessarily to change my own opinion but, to try to better understand how, why, and what others so fiercely believe. I did find the book at times, a little to predictable as far as the story line went, however, that didn't make it any less thought provoking when looking at the theme as a whole.

Quotable Moments:
"Her vulnerability was showing? This was news to her. She wanted to ask where, so she could tuck it back where it belonged." pg. 5

"So many words. Oh, he wasn't read to give up any of them." pg. 22

"Never expect." pg. 23

"Is there life after Shakespeare. Now that is a question worth asking?" pg. 19

"the way he lit up when he caught sight of her, that crooked, face-splitting grin as he tumbled forward, taking a running leap across the room and hurling himself into her arms." pg. 28

"A remarkable discrepancy, he thought. They should write that on my tombstone." pg. 55

"When she was done reading, she felt dizzy, nauseated, agitated, sweaty, itchy, feverish, and fat." pg. 67

"You had to be where you were. The life you're living, the moment you're in" pg. 106

"You think you're in control, but really you're simply staring at the moving lights." pg. 119

"Her eyes were red-rimmed, accusing." pg. 127

"Time to stop this." pg. 150

"She did her part; she kept a pleasant expression on her face and did her job the best she could despite the absolute storm of shit that sometimes came down on her." pg. 165

"You're a good man, and she's a stupid woman." pg. 175

"If consciousness survived death--and he had showed that it did--then how did this connect with what Max Planck and the quantum physicists realized: that events didn't occur unless they were observed, and therefore that consciousness was fundamental, and matter itself was derived from it?" pg. 207

"She had no thoughts or feelings left. She was watching herself from a great height, the way the recent dead are said to watch their own bodies." pg. 210

"All she remembered was being shocked that the world had so much pain in it, and the unfairness that one family should take on so much of the suffering." pg. 261

"Why were we all hoarding love, stockpiling it, when it was all around us, moving in and out of us like thin air, if only we could feel it?" pg. 302

"There was nothing to hold on to anymore. Only everything." pg. 323

"What if what you did mattered more because life happened again and again, consequences unfolding across centuries and continents? What if you had chances upon chances to love the people you loved, to fix what you screwed up, to get it right?" pg. 334

"The secret to life is ice cream." pg. 351

If you have any sort of interest in the "afterlife," or any thoughts (yay or nay) on whether there is life after death, I would highly recommend this read. However, if you have no interest in the various perceptions of life after death, then this novel most likely isn't for you.

Harry Potter - En Français!

It took me 51 weeks but I did it! I finally finished the 1st Harry Potter novel in French!

Most of you probably already know the Harry Potter story so I don't need to do my typical summary & review. However, I will go ahead and say that if you are planning on using reading as a tool for improving your language skills, I would recommend choosing something that is not in the fantasy genre. I spent so much time translating words I didn't know, only to realize that they were made up words in English as well.

Anyway, I can barely believe I actually completed this so I am so freaking stoked and that's all I really have to say about it!

We Are Pirates by Daniel Handler

Book #1 completed in 2016: We Are Pirates by Daniel Handler

This is the 3rd under this name of his that I have read (he also goes by Lemony Snicket - and, of course, years ago I read all 13 books from his Series of Unfortunate Events). I do find myself slightly biased when it comes to choosing to read his novels, but that is simply because his writing never fails! There is something so subtle, yet so unique about his style of writing that I can't help but fall in love with it.

Anyway, enough of me blabbering on about how much I love Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), here is my assessment of my most recent read:

Summary:
This novel is about 14 year old Gwen, who is struggling to feel like she belongs, even in her own home. After meeting a new friend, or two, together they rally a crew of odd-balls and mis-fits and hit the "high-seas" on a unique endeavor to leave it all behind. All the while, Gwen's father, Phil Needle, while pursuing a job prospect, struggles in his relationship with his wife as well as trying to make it home to find his daughter.

Review:
I found this novel tough to follow/get in to at first (which was thoroughly disappointing for me since I have a fondness for Daniel Handler's writing), however, within a chapter or two, I was hooked by not only the abrupt, vulgar imagery and language, as well as the unique style that the modern day Pirate theme carried with it. Although this book is mostly based on a 14 year old girl, I definitely would not consider this a youth or teen novel. There is a varying range of harsh curse words, and blatant, as well as subtle, sexual references.
Overall I thought the novel was well written and carried a unique premise. Daniel Handler has a very special way of writing exactly how you would expect different ages/genders think, so this is definitely worth a read (as long as you are not easily offended)!

Quotable Moments:
"Where does trouble come from? How do you get into it? It was no trouble to steal any of these things, and the thief was untroubled during the entire easy adventure, her immune system and her skin flushed and glowing." pg. 9

"If people were sorry before-hand, they wouldn't do things." pg. 21

"It went down the drain to stain the ocean." pg. 27

"His teasing her was so many things at once: Gwen's desire for him, her shame at her desire, her embarrassment at her shame." pg. 35

"And we have the spirit of rebellion." pg. 102

"If nobody knew then, they wouldn't know now." pg. 107

"'We want to forge a social order,' she said, 'beyond the realm of traditional authority.'" pg. 109

"Blow jobs weren't out of the ordinary." pg. 142

"They would leave her, Gwen decided, let her howls, like a ghost, warn other sailors away." pg. 171

"Nobody, nobody, nobody should have children." pg. 229

"She wanted them to go wrong better." pg. 243

"Look for your breath to save your life, or the lives of those you love." pg. 267

I hope you take the time to check out any of Daniel Handler's novels!

2016 Resolutions

As most bloggers are probably doing, I am also starting the new year off with my list of resolutions for 2016!

In no particular order here they are:

Complete FBfit (the old one plus the new one that is coming out next week!)
-I've already done FBreach, FB30 (2 week trial), FBbooty, FBabs, and am currently working on FB30 (8 week program). The FBfit programs have longer videos and include a bit more weight lifting so I'm excited for a challenge!
(FBfit 8 week program)

Complete two French novels
-Last year I received the 1st Harry Potter novel in french and I'm three quarters of the way through. I plan to finish it, plus read the two Sarah Dessen novels I received for x-mas in French before the end of this year...which means I should probably pick up the pace!
(My two French Sarah Dessen novels)

Grow my nails
-This one goes on my list every year, and this one I fail at every year. 2016 is going to finally be the year of nice...well, let's be realistic, decent nails!
(Here is day 1)

Do a controlled handstand
-Last year I made a 30 before 30 list which included doing a controlled headstand. Since it only took me a month or two for success, I plan to up the stakes this year and aim to accomplish a full handstand.

Go camping
-Every year Mark and I say we're going to camp in the summer, and every year the summer comes, flies by, and next thing we know winter is upon us. This year I am so determined to finally go camping!

Teach Captain a new trick
-I always find myself forgetting how important it is to keep Captain mentally stimulated. Teaching new tricks is a great way to keep him active (even if hes not running around outside). I've already started teaching Captain to "up" so I plan on getting him confident at that plus maybe a "spin" or something a little more challenging.
(Teaching Captain "up/dance")

Complete 7 chin-ups
-I decided I wanted a really tough fitness goal this year so Mark came up with this for me: "Do as many chin-ups as I can do today" he said. So today Mark did as many chin-ups as he could (clean form). The result: 7. So, now I have to do 7 complete chin-ups. This is going to be a huuuuuge challenge for me since I've been known as "noodle arms", but I'm excited to let my body surprise me!

And, speaking of Mark, I also have to include his resolution because this is the first year since we have been together (over 6.5 years) that he is actually making one and I could not be more thrilled!
Marks resolution is to read a book. This is huuuuuge because a) he hates anything academic, b) I think he's going to love it way more than he expects, and c) it'll give us something else in common! Oh, plus, he's going to let me help him choose the book! If anyone has any suggestions for a book for the man who is discouraged by reading, please let me know!

What are your New Years Resolutions for 2016?

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

Book #8 completed in 2015: Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen. This is the 12th book by Sarah Dessen I have read to date! Needless to say, I can't get enough of her writing!

Summary:
This novel is about a teenage girl feeling lost in the shadow of her older, reckless brother. After her brother, Peyton, is sent to jail, Sydney decides to switch schools and is left to her own devices to rediscover herself. She makes new friends (Layla and Mac), finds new interests, and slowly discovers what it's like to finally be seen.

Review:
10 out of 10! Sure, I'm probably a little biased because I've loved so many of her novels before,  but this one, I think, takes the cake! The internal emotional/mental battles that Dessen describes are so well thought out that you can't help but relate to some degree. She describes so well, how we struggle due to others' choices and how we have to find our own voice in all matters, of the heart, or otherwise.

Quotable Moments:
"My brother stood up. Beside me, my mom tensed, sucking in a breath. Like the way they tell you to inhale before an X-ray so they can see more, get it all." pg. 1

"-and we'd all go back down the rabbit hole of charges, lawyers, court, and sentences." pg. 10-11

"If I hated the crowds but also my own company, where did that leave me? It was the saddest I'd felt in a long time." pg. 26

"I'd done the right thing. I always did. It just would have been nice if someone had noticed." pg. 61

"With shame, like horseshoes, proximity counts." pg. 76

"I met her eyes, saying nothing but wishing she would. That somehow, in the midst of all her grief and distraction, she might be able to finally see me, if not hear the words I couldn't speak aloud." pg. 93

"'He doesn't notice much of anything when it comes to me.'
I'd never though this before, actually, but as soon as I said it, I realized it was true." pg. 107

"Finally, I was alone, just like I'd wanted. It felt so awful. Like it was just what I deserved." pg. 160

"There's no shame in trying to make stuff work, is how I see it. It's better than just accepting the broken." pg. 244

"I would have loved to know how it felt, just once, to have something fall apart and see options instead of endings." pg. 244-245

"You know, to be acknowledged without feeling targeted." pg. 248

"It's something about seeing all these people in their separate places. Like little snapshots of the whole world as it's happening, simultaneously." pg. 250

"No longer if, just when." pg. 254

"Again, I was surprised. How much else did we see differently?" pg. 260

"There, in the woods, on a late fall Thursday afternoon, it was perfect." pg. 293

"Again, she'd hit it dead-on. How the guilt felt so heavy on me, like ten of those drapes they put on you at the dentist before they take X-rays." pg. 300

"Relationships evolve, just like people do. Just because you know someone doesn't mean you know everything about them." pg. 351

"It was easier to just be mad at my mom; sympathy and empathy are complicated things." pg. 352

"You get used to people being a certain way; you depend on it. And when they surprise you, for better or worse, it can shake you to your core." pg. 407

Another amazing novel by Sarah Dessen.  I hope you take the time to read it!
